January 26, 2017 – Columbus Scholar House is a unique affordable housing community designed to improve lives, families, and communities through education.  Situated within four miles of ten local colleges, Columbus Scholar House provides thirty-eight units of project-based Section 8 housing for low-income student parents. The project is a co-development of Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority and CPO Management, an affiliate of Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing, which launched as a pilot in 2012, thanks to a partnership with the Affordable Housing Trust (AHT).  AHT received Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) funding to renovate a historic building for mixed use, including ten residential units above commercial space designated for AHT’s office. In 2014, OHFA awarded tax credits to Columbus Scholar House for the completion of an additional twenty- eight units.  The Columbus Scholar House community contributes to the revitalization efforts of the Near East Side neighborhood and the P.A.C.T. Initiative.

Columbus Scholar House residents, though highly motivated, are first-generation college students who otherwise face barriers in completing their degree. The children of these families are often in need of essential early childhood development experiences to prepare for future academic success.  To address these needs, Columbus Scholar House supports parents in completing their education while providing access to quality, affordable childcare for their children. The Family Services Coordinator works with participants to develop goals and promote success. The Columbus Scholar House community provides quality, affordable housing, comprehensive resident services, and childcare to support parents and their children concurrently, applying a two-generation approach to end the cycle of poverty.

Through further collaboration with AHT, which offered to relocate their office, Future Scholars Community Learning Center, located on-site, opened its doors in 2016 and operates through a partnership with the YMCA of Central Ohio.  This renovated office space was ideal to provide childcare access to Columbus Scholar House families.  The Center serves ninety- six children ages 0-5 years, along with fifteen slots for after-school care.

Columbus Scholar House management staff works closely with the faculty of The Ohio State University, Columbus State Community College and several other post-secondary schools to ensure students/program participants are successful throughout their residency, while promoting a passion for continued education and self-sufficiency.
