CMHA Awarded $300,000 HUD Choice Neighborhood Initiative Planning Grant

January 11, 2012 – U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Assistant Secretary for Public and Indian Housing, Sandra B. Henriquez, joined long-time OCCH partner Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority and Executive Director Charles Hillman in the announcement of a $300,000 grant that will support the development of a comprehensive neighborhood revitalization plan for Poindexter Village and the surrounding Columbus neighborhood.

The HUD Choice Neighborhood Initiative Planning Grant will fund revitalization efforts in the distressed Near East Side of Columbus. Poindexter Village, the 26-acre, 414-unit public housing project, is part of the Poindexter Village Neighborhood Transformation Plan. CMHA and PACT (Partners Achieving Community Transformation) have partnered together to create a vibrant, sustainable community that provides residents with safe and affordable housing, quality health care, education and employment opportunities.

Other partners in this initiative include The Ohio State University, nonprofit housing developer National Church Residences, and the City of Columbus. CMHA, as one of 13 recipients across the country out of 71 applicants and a recipient of the Planning Grant, will be eligible to compete for a Choice Neighborhood Implementation Grant that could be worth between $10-$20 million.
